What is revenue cycle management (RCM)?
Revenue cycle management is everything that has to happen for a practice to get paid for the care it provides.
The short answer
RCM covers every step from the moment a patient books a visit until the balance is paid. It is not one task. It is a chain, and a weak link anywhere can delay or lose payment.
The steps in the chain
- Before the visit: scheduling, collecting patient details, checking insurance eligibility and getting prior authorization when needed.
- At the visit: documentation and charge capture, so every service is recorded.
- Coding and claims: turning the visit into the right codes and sending a clean claim to the payer.
- After the claim: posting payments, working denials and following up on unpaid claims.
- Patient balances: statements, payment plans and reminders.
- Reporting: reviewing numbers such as days in AR and denial rate to find problems early.
Where small practices usually lose money
Rarely in one big place. More often it is many small ones: eligibility not checked, a claim filed late, a denial not appealed before the deadline, or an old balance nobody had time to call about. Our guides on why claims get denied and the AR follow-up checklist cover the most common ones.
Doing it yourself or getting help
Some practices run all of this in-house. Others hand part or all of it to a partner. Arovia RCM focuses on the back end for independent US practices: AR follow-up, denial management and unpaid claims recovery. See the full list on our RCM services page.
Arovia RCM does not guarantee collection outcomes. Please do not send patient information through the website or by email before agreements are signed.
