RCM vs medical billing: what is the difference?
Medical billing is one part of revenue cycle management. The difference matters when you decide what to outsource.
Medical billing
Medical billing is mainly preparing and submitting claims to insurers and handling what comes back. It is a core task, but it is only a piece of the whole process.
Revenue cycle management
RCM is the whole financial process around a patient visit: eligibility and authorization before the visit, charge capture and coding, claim submission, payment posting, denial management, AR follow-up, patient billing and reporting. Billing sits in the middle of that chain.
Why it matters when you hire help
A company that only submits claims will not necessarily chase unpaid claims or appeal denials. When you compare providers, ask exactly which steps are included, and which are not. Many practices are fine on claim submission but lose money on follow-up, which is where a focused AR follow-up or denial management partner can help.
A quick way to decide
- Claims go out late or with errors: look at billing and coding.
- Claims go out fine but money is slow or missing: look at follow-up and denials.
- New providers wait to get paid: look at credentialing.
Arovia RCM does not guarantee collection outcomes. Please do not send patient information through the website or by email before agreements are signed.
