How to choose a medical billing company: 10 questions to ask
A good partner answers these clearly. Be cautious if answers are vague.
The questions
- Exactly which tasks are included and which are extra?
- Will you sign a Business Associate Agreement before seeing any patient data?
- How do you protect PHI, and who will have access?
- Which billing systems and clearinghouses can you work in?
- What will I see in reports, and how often?
- Who is my day-to-day contact?
- How do you handle denials and appeal deadlines?
- How are fees calculated, and is anything charged beyond that?
- What are the contract length and exit terms, and do I keep my data?
- Can I speak to a current client?
Red flags
- A guaranteed collection result.
- Pressure to sign quickly or a long lock-in with no exit.
- No clear answer on who owns your data and payer accounts.
- Reluctance to put the scope in writing.
